“What should I wear today at course?”- a very much relatable question for every female golfer out there. There has been a misconception going on since the very beginning that a female golfer can only wear a polo shirt and shorts that reach below the knee. But in reality, this is not the exact scenario.
Women’s golf apparel varies on courses, weather, and most importantly, your choice and comfort. If you choose to play at a municipal system, you might not face any clothing restrictions. Most municipal golf courses do not have any dress code or strict rules. But playing at a private or public practice can create a different image. Some public and personal lessons have their dress code for men and women, and they strongly follow the rules. Although every golf course demands modest and standard attire, you don’t need to worry about it.
POLO shirt or T-shirt
You can check-in at a municipal course wearing a casual t-shirt and a pant without hesitating. But when it comes to playing in any private or public system, you should remember that T-shirts are unaccepted at most courses.
Polo tops are a better choice for you as they are widely appreciated for golfing. You will find many variations in polo shirts such as V-neck, button-down, zip-top, and long or short sleeves. These polo tops are available in different patterns, floral prints, and an array of colors. You can select your favorite polo top or customize one according to your fashion sense.
Make sure to wear a collared top as is recommended. Turtleneck and screw-neck tops are also in considerable demand for golfing nowadays. So if you feel comfortable in the turtleneck style, you can smoothly go for that. Unlike men, women can wear the top without a collar, however. If you are not comfortable in any collared shirts, you can skip it by wearing long or average lengthy sleeves. The condition is to having long sleeves when you do not go for a collared top.
Nevertheless, avoid wearing halter tops, tank tops, strapless tops, drawstrings, and similar clothing as they are inappropriate at courses. Blouses that show excessive skin are not encouraged at golf courses.
Sweaters and Jackets
It is permitted to layering up your outfit as per weather demand. When you have a morning tee time, the temperature tends to be a little down. But during your playtime, it keeps changing. So, wearing a jacket or sweater is a great idea. You can wrap a lightweight vest or sweater over your top on a cold day as it won’t hamper your swing. A turtleneck sweater, golf vest, sports jacket, wind shirt, or waterproof jacket is a go-to option for a cold morning practice. I keep a wind shirt in my golf bag all the time for the times when the temperature suddenly falls.
But, denim jackets or sweatshirts are disallowed at courses because they are way too casual.
For the bottom, various options are available there to look good in a conservative way. The standard golf clothing rules allow shorts, skirts, slacks for girls.
The choice is relatively easy on winter days as you can wear long pants or slacks, which is accepted. But for warmer days, things can get a little confusing. As I mentioned earlier, different courses have different rules for clothing, including shorts. However, you can switch to your short slacks, such as capris or crops. You have to be sure the length of the temporary hit the knee. Some courses allow pants up to above four inches of the knee for girls. But it is safe to wear knee-long slacks or shorts as some studies are strict about their dress code. Remember to wear pants or spaces that have belt loops for wearing belts.
Some clothing options are discouraged while golfing, like sundresses, sweatpants, athletic pants, and leggings.
Quality shoes are essential for better stroke and performance. Almost every course wants the golfers to wear golf shoes, whether it is men or women. I suggest you not wear any running or casual shoes at practices because it negatively impacts your performance and stability. Be wise enough to invest in your footwear.
Choose a pair of non-metal spiked shoes. These pointed shoes provide a firm footing and comfort while golfing. They are required in almost every golf course.
Socks also play a vital role in providing comfort to you while playing all day long. So, it is better to wear a stocking that absorbs moisture and is soft to your leg all the time you play. While wearing shorts or skorts, avoid wearing long socks. Opt for no-show socks mostly.
Some minimal accessories add fun and style to your golf look, and most courses don’t have any restrictions on minimal or basic accessorizing. It is expected to see ladies playing golf with a hat over the head or visor to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. So many options of hats and visors are available in arrays of style and color. More enormous crocheted hats are being trendy in recent years as they do a better job keeping the sun off to the head. Pick a hat that goes with your outfit and make your look flawless.
You can also wear sunglasses and a classy wristwatch to enhance your attire more. While choosing a watch, make sure to pick a waterproof and sweatproof one.
Women’s golf apparel should be soft, comfortable, acceptable, yet appealing. Choose the cloth material that suits you, and do not restrict your performance in any way. You certainly have to follow a proper dress code when playing in a private or sometimes in a public course. But almost every system has an exact women’s dress code. As long you know the basic rules, you won’t have to worry about what you should wear today at the fairway.
Still, my recommendation is to be sure of the dress code of the particular course you’re planning to go to. Check the course website and find whether any specific dress code is followed or not. If not found, call them once and be sure about it. It shows you respect the ethics and won’t have to return home without even entering the fairway.
